Report: INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM "European Muslims' Perceptions of the Holocaust in Paris"

2-4 June 2010
Executive Summary
The symposium brought together scholars, educators and other experts who have dealt with the issue of European Muslims' perceptions of the Holocaust in one way or another or whose expertise adds to a further understanding of the backgrounds of how European Muslims are informed about the Holocaust.
It became clear, once again, that European Muslims are far from being a homogeneous group. The factors of influence on European Muslims' perceptions of the Holocaust need further exploration. In addition to relevant factors of the general population in Europe, some specific factors emerged, such as the discourses about the Holocaust in the countries of origin and communities and also respective discourses about Jews; views of the Holocaust are influenced by views of Jews and vice versa.
For an understanding of European Muslims' perception of the Holocaust it is important to take the history of Holocaust remembrance in Europe and in the countries of origin into account.

Paris: Symposium on European Muslims' Perceptions of the Holocaust

2 - 4 June, Paris
The symposium explores contemporary perceptions of European Muslims of the Holocaust. What knowledge do European Muslims have about the Holocaust and how do they see it? How do Muslims participate in Holocaust commemorations and which approaches and cooperations have been successful in integrating Muslim communities in participating? Scholars and experts from European countries such as France, Germany, UK and the Netherlands are invited to discuss these issues from their perspective.
Relevant results from two exploratory studies on the issue by the Groupe Sociétés, Religions, Laïcités (EPHE/CNRS) and IIBSA will also be presented. Experts are invited to discuss the perception of the Holocaust in Muslim countries such as Morocco, Turkey and Arab countries in general.
Additionally, approaches of Holocaust Education for European Muslims are discussed by practitioners in the field. The Colloquium brings together scholars, educational experts on the issue and activists in the field and explores areas for further research.
We invite scholars and educators for an open discussion. There is no conference fee.

SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN WITH THE MOROCCAN ORGANIZATION "MÉMOIRE COLLECTIVE" (COLLECTIVE MEMORY)

"Mémoire Collective" (Collective Memory) is a recently-created organization whose mission is to fight hatred, intolerance, violence, racism, antisemitism, and islamist fundamentalism.
The organization´s board of directors made a public announcement at the beginning of the year about the start of their activities in line with the principles previously described. This provoked a reaction from two Islamist organizations:
· Al Badil Al Hadari. A Political party banned in Morocco after some of its members were found to be allegedly linked with international terrorist networks. The armed wing of this group planned to assassinate members of the government, the armed forces, and Jewish citizens according to the Ministry of the Interior, who also confirmed that they made contact with al Qaeda in Afghanistan in 2001 and participated in Hezbollah training camps in Lebanon in 2005.
Members of this organization posted death threats on the Internet against members of Collective Memory´s board of directors and their families. They are, without a doubt, real threats, given the profile of those who issue them.
· Justice and Development. A Political party with Islamist leanings has published strong criticisms of Mohamed Mouha (the Collective Memory representative) . In its newspaper it calls for him to be attacked physically, accusing him of being a Zionist agent, and making other charges against him that would fit the definition of anti-Semitism by the European Agency of Fundamental Rights.
The situation has generated great unease and fear for the safety of our colleagues in Collective Memory and their families, as the government of Morocco has not provided any protective measure of protection, nor publicly defended the liberty of its citizens to exercise their right to free association and opinion.
Therefore, we request that you all offer your support to the Solidarity Campaign with Collective Memory, consisting of:
- Signing a communiqué of support
- Sending faxes and e-mails to the Moroccan Embassy in Spain, the Ministry of the Interior of Morocco, and the advisor to the Royal House, whose addresses and fax numbers we attach.
